sm-gavelcashIn the 2019 fiscal year, the United States recovered more than $3 billion in settlements and judgments in False Claims Act cases. Assistant Attorney General Jody Hunt of the Department of Justice noted that “the continued success of the department’s False Act enforcement efforts are a testament to the tireless efforts of the civil servants who investigate, litigate, and try these important cases as well of to the fortitude of whistleblowers who report fraud.”

The overwhelming majority of those recoveries originated with health care fraud cases. Indeed, $2.2 billion of the $1.8 billion total resulted from claims asserted against parties in the health care field, including drug and medical device manufacturers, managed care providers, hospitals, pharmacies, hospice organizations, laboratories, and physicians. Whistleblowers were instrumental in recovering additional funds on behalf state Medicaid programs.
